On This Episode
This week, AJ Rosenbohm, longtime member and past president of the New Orleans Fly Fishers Club, joins the show to talk about one of the South’s most unique and quirky tournaments: the Rio Grande Rumble. This one-day, fly-fishing-only event targets the Rio Grande cichlid—an invasive but beloved urban species that’s made itself right at home in the shallow canals and parks of New Orleans. What started 17 years ago as a fun club rodeo has grown into a popular gathering that brings together anglers from across the Gulf Coast to share stories, eat good food, and raise money for Casting for Recovery.
AJ shares how he fell back in love with fly fishing after years of conventional angling, eventually becoming a commercial fly tier and an advocate for warmwater fly culture along the Gulf. We dive into Rio behavior, effective flies, and why bank fishing is actually the best way to target these bold, brawny little fish. It’s a celebration of urban angling, grassroots community, and the joy of catching something weird right in your backyard.
