With technological advances in fishing equipment, such as bottom machines that can read the bottom in very deep water with precision and in great detail, bigger and faster boats, bottom mapping software, as well as advances in fishing reel technology, the deep drop fishing game has drastically changed in the last 5 to 10 years. These electric fishing reels, make it much easier for anglers to target the deep dwelling species that are a blast to catch as well as delicious table fare.
There are so many options on the market today it can be a bit overwhelming trying to decide what electric fishing reel will be best to fit your boat as well as your fishing needs. There are many options all the way from battery powered handheld options to bigger more powerful options that have to be left in a rod holder and plug in to your vessels power grid to operate. In this article we will be your guide, on choosing the best electric fishing reel for your pursuits
Deep drop electric fishing reels are fishing reels designed for deep sea fishing, typically used to target bottom-dwelling fish species found at depths of 600 to 1,200 feet or more. These reels are often specialized and more powerful than other types of electric reels, with higher line capacities, heavy-duty gears, and stronger drag systems.
The benefits of deep drop electric fishing reels include but are not limited to:
On a recent Alabama Saltwater Fishing Report podcast we talked with deep drop expert Capt. Kurt Tillman and we picked his brain on electric fishing reels and what he does to have success with this newer technique.
Q: At What water depth do you switch to electric reels?
A: When I start getting in like 250 foot is usually when I switch for the good of the angler and for the best chance to have success fishing. What I like to do on a charter is stop in shallower water in order to give people a chance to get familiar with the rod and reel set up, most of these reels you leave in the rod holder, so it is different than just holding a fishing pole and being able to feel a bite so it can take some learning and these practice runs will make you more proficient when the deep water grouper bite is really hot. You have to be looking at the end of the pole and see the bite, so it takes some getting used to, you are not relying solely on feel like traditional bottom fishing.
Q: How important is the retrieval rate on these reels? Do you want to have an adjustable retrieve rate so you can get more speed and torque when you need it?
A: There are several factors to consider, are there a lot of sharks on this spot? How fast are you going to try and reel this fish in? A lot of times if you give it too much power you will pull a lot of fish off the hook with the motor wide open. I try and come up as slow as possible, but if sharks are chewing the rod tips off, sometimes you just have to come up as fast as possible. If the sharks are this bad, it is probably time to find a new spot anyways.
Q: What size braid do you prefer on your electric reels? These are big fish with a lot of power and these reels have a lot of drag as well.
A: I use 100 or 150 pound test mainly because my equipment gets used a lot and I do not want to have to worry about breaking off. If I was not charter fishing, maybe, could get away with 80. I use heavier line than most people.
Q: So with 100 or 150 pound line, How tight do you keep your drag?
A: We keep the drag at a marginal level, about 20 pounds. I use a 4 pound weight, so you already have a fair amount of poundage on the line. And with a 4 pound weight you reduce tangles if you are fishing multiple rods and reels. It helps to keep the line straight up and down and reduces scope in your line.
Q: What about a line counter, do you feel that is important?
A: For practical reasons it is nice to have, but I do not have to have it on my reels that I use.
Q: What kind of reels do you use?
A: I like the Diawa 1000s and they just came out with a 1200 and it seems to be a little bit beefier of a reel. I have caught big Amberjack on the 1000 and it will actually strip that reel out! Those little reels are tough and powerful, but they aren’t really meant for a bunch of drag to be stripped off of it quickly. We caught a blue marlin on one day and the reel actually held up!
Q: Have you had any other kind of failures in these reels, do you look for anything in particular in the construction to make sure they will last?
A: These reels work really good for what they are. The biggest issue I have is the connection to the power source, the plugs fail. The plug is something to look at and make sure it is quality.
To figure out what the best saltwater electric fishing reel is for your specific needs, consider the following factors:
When I think of a big game electric fishing reel I am thinking about the Hooker Reel that Capt. Kurt mentioned on our podcast, these reels are going to have more line capacity, more powerful motors, higher retrieval rate and more durable construction for wear and tear of large fish coming from very deep water. Anglers use these reels to commercial fish big fish like swordfish and other giant deep water species. The drags are stouter and they are designed to do battle with the creatures of the deep.
Penn’s International VI series of reels are known for their strength and durability, but what sets them apart is their surprisingly lightweight design. This is due to a redesign by Penn that repositions the drag elements from the left to the right side of the reel, reducing the amount of metal used and resulting in significant weight savings.
The Penn International 30 VISW Autostop Combo is no exception to this lightweight design, and it also includes a level-wind and digital line counter. However, what makes this reel truly unique is its Bluetooth connectivity. Instead of using an RF remote, the reel can be controlled through Bluetooth connectivity, allowing you to monitor your line counter, RPMs, and control the speed from your iPhone or iPad. To use this function, anglers must download Hooker Electric’s “ReelTime” app from the Apple App Store, which is also compatible with desktop through iTunes.

How do electric fishing reels work?
The basic components of an electric fishing reel are the motor, the battery, and the gearing system. The motor is typically located in the reel housing, and it is powered by a rechargeable battery or the reel can be plugged in to the integrated power system if the vessel is equipped. The gearing system is responsible for converting the rotation of the motor into the winding action that pulls in the fishing line. When an angler engages the electric fishing reel, the motor is activated and begins to rotate. The motor’s rotation is transferred to the gearing system, which in turn rotates the spool that holds the fishing line. The rotation of the spool winds the fishing line onto the reel, pulling in the fish.
Electric fishing reels are typically equipped with a variety of speed and power settings that can be adjusted to suit different fishing conditions. For example, if an angler is fishing in deep water, they may choose a higher power setting to help them reel in fish more quickly. Similarly, if an angler is fishing for larger fish, they may choose a slower speed setting to provide more torque and pulling power.
How to use electric fishing reels?
In order to use an electric fishing reel you must first have power. Charge the battery or plug in the reel to the power system that the vessel has hardwired. Before dropping down for the first time you will want to set the drag properly. The drag setting will help prevent the fishing line from breaking when a fish is pulling on the line.
Next, you will need to be familiar with the power and speed settings of the reel. Make sure you know how to adjust these on the fly so you do not lose fish unnecessarily. These settings may vary fish to fish and they will certainly vary from spot to spot with changing current and wind conditions.
When you are ready to reel in your catch, engage the electric fishing reel by pressing the button or turning the knob that activates the motor. The reel will begin to wind in the fishing line automatically, making it easier for you to reel in the fish. Monitor the electric fishing reel as you reel in your catch. Keep an eye on the speed and power settings, and adjust them as necessary to ensure that you are reeling in the fish at a consistent rate.
In conclusion, there are many options on the market when it comes to electric fishing reels. When it comes down to picking the best option for you and your pursuits, the main factors to consider are what you will be doing most of the time with the reel you purchase, what budget constraints you are within and keep in mind that cheaper is not always the best option. I am personally learning the older I get that it pays off in the long run to ”buy once, cry once.” I hope that this round up of electric fishing reels aides in your choice to try some deep drop fishing and bring home some delicious deep water species for years to come.
